The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has given the green light for numerous amendments to the constitution of Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim), including a change of name.

Henceforth, the tiny Kelantan-based party will be officially known as Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita).

According to Kita central executive council member Muhammad Firdaus Christopher, the RoS has also approved amendments to key portions of the party constitution and logo.

“With the change in the party constitution, the party is now open to all races and no longer limited to Muslims. Now, all are welcomed,” he said.

He said that RoS had took only one month to approve the amendments.

Previously, critics have argued that RoS practices double standards in the registration or delaying constitutional amendments of sought by opposition parties.

In the case Parti Keadilan Nasional's merger with Parti Rakyat Malaysia,the RoS took nearly a year to inform them that the constitutional amendments sought were rejected . 

In the case of Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), its application to be recognised as a formal political party was approved by the RoS only after 10 years.

Will Kita contest in by-elections?

Muhammad Firdaus adds that the RoS approval would generate more interest in among all levels of society to join the party.

The party was launched last month with former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim at the helm after his bitter exit from PKR.

He promised that Kita will be a national party that champions issues on a bipartisan level.

“It will not be drawn to either BN or Pakatan Rakyat,” pledged Zaid.

On whether Kita would make its maiden electoral foray in either the Merlimau or Kerdau by-election, Muhammad Firdaus said there was no decision on this.

“There is always a possibility ….but we will discuss the matter further. No decision has been made yet,” he said.

The Merlimau by-election in Malacca is scheduled for March 6 while the date for the Kerdau by-election had yet to be set.
