About 50 pro-Mahasiswa faction students held a procession at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) campus, complete with a ‘coffin and corpse’, in protest at the university’s handling of the campus elections.

NONE The ‘coffin’ was in fact a cardboard box while the ‘corpse’ was made of cloth and symbolically soaked in red liquid to symbolise blood.

The group are protesting against the authorities' decision to disqualify four of the faction’s candidate from contesting in the Monday polls.

The 20-minute procession started at the university carpark and ended in front of the university’s administration building where a protest letter by the group was submitted.

In the letter, the group also urged campus authorities to postpone the polls because of alleged interference by a political party.

NONE They claim that a political party had sponsored RM59,000 for candidates of their choosing in campuses throughout the country for campus polls purposes.

Some pro-Mahasiswa activists were also seen carrying banners which read “Students reject political interference” and “Political parties do not interfere”.

Last night, nominations for six pro-Mahasiswa candidates were disqualified on grounds that their nomination forms were incomplete.

Two appeals from the six have been accepted.

A total of 43 seats are up for grabs in the UPM student council.
