Muhyiddin Yassin wants efforts to be intensified to ensure that about 1.2 million members of the BN component parties, including Umno, are registered as voters.

The deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president said it would be to the detriment of Umno and the BN because party members who were not registered as voters would not be able to help the party in the next general election.

"Out of the 1.2 members of the BN who did not register as voters, 420,000 are Umno members," he said when launching the simultaneous annual conventions of the Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings of the Pagoh Umno division at Kompleks Pekembar, Pagoh today.

However, he said, the number of Umno members who had yet to register as voters had declined compared to the 600,000 members who failed to do so last year.

Muhyiddin wanted the Umno machinery at the branch level to be mobilised to ensure that more party members were registered as voters.

He also wanted efforts to be carried out at the branch level to increase the number of Umno members.

In addition, he said, Umno must also make more efforts to resolve the numerous problems faced by the people, not only quickly but also in a continuous manner.

"The problems faced by the people must be resolved quickly so that these problems would not be turned into an issue in future general elections," he said.

The deputy prime minister repeated his call for a change to be carried out in Umno quickly and in line with the aspiration and requirement of the people at all levels.

Meanwhile, he also announced the appointment of the State assemblyman for Jorak, Dr Shahruddin Mohd Salleh as the chairman of the Cooperatives Consultative Council for the Pagoh parliamentary constituency.

Besides the Jorak state constituency, the Pagoh parliamentary constituency also includes the Bukit Serampang state consttuency.
