Former Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) president Bakaruddin Othman was charged with corruption in a sessions court in Shah Alam today.

The 57-year-old was charged under section 15 of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997, which is punishable with a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of five times the value of the amount involved in the offence, under section 16 of the same Act.

NONE He is accused of slipping the cost of renovation works done on his house into the MPS expenditure budget by way of invoice number 7/200, thereby having a personal interest in the expenditure.

The charge states that Bakaruddin ( left ), who is now deputy chief secretary (planning and development) at the Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being Ministry, used his position as president of the municipal council to commit the act.

He is alleged to have committed the offence at his former office at the MPS building on Pesiaran 3 in Bandar Baru Selayang, Gombak.

Bakaruddin claimed trial. Sessions court judge Asmadi Husin set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and fixed April 4 for further mention.

Abdul Razak Musa of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission appeared for the prosecution.
