One student was killed and another seriously injured when a man armed with a machete chased and attacked three students in Sabah, a senior police official said yesterday.

The 12-year-old victim, Abdul Baki Moin, died of head injuries, Joseph Jolis, a local police chief was quoted by the official Bernama news agency as saying.

Jolis said the man hit Abdul Baki o­n the head using a machete when he tried to escape.

Stable condition

The victim's friend, known as Romeo, 12, has been admitted to hospital with stab wounds. Police said he is in stable condition.

Jolis said police shot dead the attacker, believed to be mentally ill, after he grabbed Romeo and began stabbing him, despite being coaxed not to harm the boy. The other student, Abdul Baki's brother, Amir was unharmed. - AFP
