Some 100 Malaysian activists wil be holding a candlelit vigil outside the Indonesian mission here tonight to demand an end to military action in Indonesia's troubled Aceh province, an activist said.

"The vigil is to demonstrate our support for the Aceh people and to urge the government to resume negotiations with GAM (Free Aceh Movement)," Tadzrul, a coordinator of the gathering told AFP .

Tadzrul said the crowd was expected to come armed with banners and posters with anti-war messages.

"We hope to convey the message for an immediate ceasefire to the violence," he added.

Up to 40,000 police and soldiers are confronting an estimated 5,000 rebels from GAM, which has been fighting for an independent state since 1976. Some 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the past 27 years.
