Complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan appeared at the Kuala Lumpur High Court after being recalled by lawyer Karpal Singh to answer questions relating to the DNA of three persons found on his peri-anal area.

Although the focus in the trial today was on the revelation that then-deputy prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor had had their statements taken , Saiful’s appearance on being recalled to the witness stand took everyone by surprise.

azlan Saiful, who was the first witness to testify in the trial, has been present in the witness room for the past three days along with his father Azlan Mohd Lazim.

During that period, Saiful had been called in to be identified by the witnesses who were testifying in the trial.

Before the complainant was recalled, solicitor-general II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden had objected to the defence’s application to recall Saiful on the basis that there was no evidence to suggest more than two DNA samples had been retrieved from Saiful’s anus.

‘Relevant following Seah’s testimony’

However, Karpal said it was relevant following chemist Dr Seah Lay Hong’s testimony over the presence of DNA from three persons on the peri-anal area.

Following a short recess, and the parties meeting justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah in his chambers, Saiful was asked to take the witness stand.

Wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt and matching blue blazer, he took his oath without looking at Anwar, who was seated in the dock.

Karpal: You said regarding the incident on June 26, 2008 and also the examination done at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, did you at anytime go to the toilet?

Saiful: Yes, but I did not defecate between June 26 and 28.

Karpal: Where were the toilets?

Saiful: Several.

Karpal: Seah testified there was DNA profiling of three people in the peri-anal ( keliling dubur ) region. It means (you had) more than two or three partners?

Saiful: No. I cannot comment on the (Seah’s) finding.

On re-examination by Yusof, Saiful said he rinsed himself at the Desa Damansara condominium and went to the toilet at his home.

Yusof: You did not go to other toilets anywhere else?

Saiful: No.

After the trial, Saiful was seen with his father and investigating officer superintendent Jude Blacious Pereira and other court police personnel, who wished him well.

Saiful has been at the centre of Anwar’s sodomy II allegation which the politican maintained was another political persecution.
