The country's National Broadband Initiative(NBI) is among the best in the world, said Deputy Information, Communication and Culture Joseph Salang Gandum.

"It is recognised not only by computing giant Microsoft now but also by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which is the world body.

"The NBI is one of the extremely important initiatives started by the

government about five years ago to give continuous Internet accessibility to the people," he told the media after closing a three-day Kelab Setia 1 Malaysia workcamp at the Sebangkoi Recreational Park near Sarikei.

Some 100 hundred students from 11 secondary schools in the Rajang Basin attended the workcamp organised by the Information Department.

"We have often been quoted at international forums as a leading example of a country and government that is very committed to promote the highest usage of ICT," said Salang.

He added that the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 was also perhaps the oldest of its kind in the world and is also often used as term of reference by others.
