Police are investigating the report lodged by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on the emergence of a sex video under Section 292 of the Penal Code for distribution of pornographic material, Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar said.
"What I can say is that police are investigating the case," he told reporters at Bukit Aman police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Section 292 provides for a jail term of up to three years and a fine or both upon conviction.
Anwar lodged the report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters today.
The video was shown to a selective group of media representatives at Carcosa Seri Negara yesterday.
In the report, copies of which were distributed to the media, Anwar denied that he was the man in the video.
An unidentified group claimed that it had a black-and-white video clip of a sexual act between an opposition leader and a woman said to be a prostitute at a hotel.
The group, led by a man who had introduced himself only as Datuk T, had said that it would hand over the videoclip to the particular opposition leader and his wife in about a week.
