An opposition newspaper that published a cartoon of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad with a pig's snout should have its permit reviewed, said outraged lawmakers.

The cartoon in the Harakah newspaper of the hardline opposition Islamic Party PAS was "most irresponsible and downright rude", the chairman of the government's Backbenchers Club, Mohd Zin Mohamad, was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

The pig is considered an unclean animal in Islam and Muslims are forbidden to eat its meat.

Mahathir is a Muslim and has headed the government of this multi-religious Southeast Asian nation for 22 years, but is accused by PAS of not being Islamic enough.

"Is this party PAS based on Islam? This is not Islamic but devilish," said Mohamad. -- AFP
