Outgoing Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad today officially opened his last party annual general assembly and delivered an emotionally-charged speech.

Towards the end of his speech, the 76-year-old statesman, who has been at the helm of the party and government for 22 years, broke into tears.

Amid sobs, he thanked Umno for helping him realise his dreams and for providing him with great opportunities. He also apologised for any mistakes and shortcomings.

Earlier in his speech, which lasted for more than hour, the premier warned about the existence of enemies within who are trying to sabotage the party.

"An enemy within is far more dangerous than an enemy outside," said Mahathir, who will be stepping down in October.

Incinerator project

The premier also criticised opponents of the mega-incinerator project, which the government plans to build in Selangor to manage waste.

He said these projects were welcomed in more advanced countries such as Japan but people here are against it.

"People in this country who are ten times poorer than those in Japan are against the project," he said, adding that the incinerator was safe, clean and not a health hazard as claimed by its critics.

The government had to relocate an incinerator originally proposed to be built in Puchong, Kuala Lumpur, to another location in Broga, Selangor, following protest by residents. Similar protests are now being made by Broga residents.

Mahathir also reiterated his disappointment that the Malays were being over dependent on the government, thus unable to compete in the open market.

Also included in his speech, which was telecast live, was his trademark anti-West bashing.

"I am not anti-European. I have many friends and acquaintances who are Europeans. Certainly their media will condemn me as a racist. But I consider exposing who the Europeans are has become so important that the risk must be taken," said Mahathir, who was ruffled many feathers abroad with his stinging remarks in the past.

Three million members

In another development, Umno secertary-general Khalil Yaakob said as of yesterday, the party had 19,034 branches and 3,038,025 members nationwide.

According to a Bernama report, he said that were also 44 Umno clubs abroad and the party's website has so far recorded more than 3.97 million hits.

Khalil said the party has reached its most formidable position and is ready to translate its strength into an outstanding victory in the next general election.

He said measures implemented by the prime minister has reaffirmed the people's confidence in Umno and the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition since the 1999 general election.
