PKR has come under flak for turning the recent fire that razed a primary school here into a political issue.

Lawas member of parliament Henry Sum Agong said instead of finding faults, the opposition should come up with assistance for the school.

"It should not be politicised because humans cannot predict such tragedies, and furthermore, the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined," he told Bernama in Lawas today.

Henry said till today no opposition party had come forward to give aid to the school and this proved that they were only good at critising the government.

On Monday, 107 pupils were forced to cut short their classes at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Long Tuma, about five kilometres from here, when fire razed their two-storey wooden dormitory.

Baru blames blaze on faulty wiring

District education officer Matzinan Wahit was quoted as saying that the affected pupils were temporarily accommodated at one of the school's classrooms.

NONE Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian ( right ) recently alleged that the blaze was due to faulty electrical wiring.

Baru, who will be contesting the Ba'Kelalan seat in the upcoming state election, also claimed that although the school headmaster had reported the matter to the relevant authority, no action had been taken.

Henry said to date, more than RM100,000 worth of assistance in cash and kind had been given to the school by BN political parties, non-govermental organisations (NGO) and corporate companies.

The school has a total of 346 students with the majority of them from villages in Ba'Kelalan and as a temporary measure, the students will be staying in the vacant teachers quarters.
