Teacher held over 7-yr-old pupil's death
Malaysian police Monday said they were holding a religious school teacher suspected of beating to death a seven-year-old pupil who was accused of stealing seven ringgit ($2.30).
Mohamad Nadzri Hussain, Arau district police chief in the northern state of Perlis, told AFP that the 26-year-old teacher had been detained on suspicion of murder.

"The teacher faces the death sentence if found guilty," he said.
"No one should take the law into their own hands. We do not condone beatings and torture of students."
The young student Saiful Syazani Saiful Sopfidee was accused of stealing the money from a classmate.
Saiful was admitted to a public hospital with head injuries on Thursday after he was allegedly tied up and beaten by the teacher for two hours, and died two days later, the Star newspaper said Monday.
In Malaysia, the death sentence is carried out by hanging.
