Penang PKR Youth has submitted a memorandum to the Penang office of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), demanding the immediate setting-up of a royal commission of inquiry to look into the death of Selangor Customs Department assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed.

NONE Leading the 15-member delegation, state PKR Youth chief Amir Ghazali ( centre ) handed over the document to Penang MACC investigation officer Zahari Zainal.

The group also handed in a letter of condolence to the family of Ahmad Sarbani at the Customs office in Penang.

When met later, Amir expressed regret that such an unfortunate incident had occurred, adding further to the decline of the reputation of the MACC and other government agencies.

“MACC must take full responsibility over this recent incident, not forgetting the case involving DAP political aideTeoh Beng Hock, who also fell to his death while in the commission’s custody,” he told reporters at Komtar today.

“MACC must take serious and drastic steps to restore its image as an agency which is supposed to take care of the welfare of the people,” he added.

Amir called on the government to set up the RCI without further delay to investigate the case as the reputation of the MACC and police are at its lowest in the history of the country.

He added that with the establishment of the RCI, the people’s confidence towards these government agencies could at least be salvaged.

NONE Ahmad Sarbani, 56, was found dead at a badminton court after falling from the third floor of the Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in Jalan Cochrane, on Wednesday morning.

He was among 62 Customs officers arrested during a dragnet on April 1 at the customs office in North Port, Port Klang.

Dubbed Operation 3B, the operations was carried out by a MACC-led task force that includes six other agencies to investigate corruption, money laundering and other offences.

‘MACC chief should quit’

Meanwhile, the Youth leader issued several demands to the government, including urging MACC head Abu Kassim Mohamed to take full responsibility over the incident by resigning immediately from his post.

“We also demand with immediate affect that the security of the people under MACC’s investigation be upgraded,”he said.

“We do not want to see a repeat of this incident. This shows clearly that Prime Minister Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia concept has failed,” he added.

“Is this (deaths while in MACC’s custody) what he means when he said that the safety and justice of the people come first?” he quipped.
