Karpal Singh has expressed surprise at the support that PAS vice-president Salahudin Ayub has reportedly given to calls for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI)  on the Carcosa sex video.

“Salahudin Ayub should toe the line and not make statements that contradict the joint stand of the component parties of the Pakatan Rakyat on the issue,” said the Bukit Gelugor MP.

He reminded Salahudin that Pakatan had already announced at a press conference that it was not in favour of the proposed RCI.

New Straits Times today reported the PAS veep telling them, “In principle, I agree (to the RCI) but I want to see the terms and conditions first as well as the composition of its members."

The mainstream daily hailed the PAS member as “the first prominent opposition leader to publicly support the call” for the RCI.

Karpal, in a statement today, said RCIs were set up for matters of national importance and not for “inconsequential matters”, that he said was an “insult to the King”.

He also pointed out that the ongoing police investigations to the Carcosa sex video related to “offences committed by the Datuk T trio” who had revealed themselves to be behind the sensational screening on March 21.

He added that with ongoing investigations and possible subsequent charges and proceedings against the perpetrators of the video, it was inappropriate to hold a concurrent RCI on the matter.

“Cabinet cannot, and should not, interfere in an ongoing trial in a court of law,” said the DAP parliamentarian.
