An 83-year-old woman was killed when a fire engulfed her wooden house in Kelantan early today, an official said.

Firemen took almost 30 minutes to control the fire before they found the woman's charred remains among the smouldering debris, a fire official was quoted as saying by Bernama news agency.

Neighbours shouting

The woman's son, Che Mat Hussin, 65, who lives near his mother's house said he heard neighbours shouting that the house was on fire.

"When I reached the house, it was already on fire and I cannot do anything to save my mother," he said.

His mother, Mek Yah Seman's remains have been sent to a public hospital for post-mortem. - AFP
