Lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun said today he will not appear before the Rights and Privileges Committee of the Selangor Legislative Assembly to which he has been summoned.

He described the summons issued to him as a political threat, and said: “I do not want to submit to the jurisdiction of (a body of) which I am not a member and to which I am not a party.”

Hafarizam represented Port Klang assemblyperson Badrul Hisham Abdullah in court after Selangor speaker Teng Chang Kim had declared his seat vacant on the grounds that he had not attended sittings for six months without any valid reason.

The Shah Alam High Court decided that the Port Klang seat was not vacant and  Badrul Hisham remained assemblyperson.

The assembly later passed a resolution for Badrul Hisham and Hafarizam to appear before the committee on charges of contempt based on a letter they wrote to Teng which the deputy speaker described as “indecent, insolent and threatening”.

As for his next course of action, Hafarizam said he would see what he could do within the framework of the law.
