Keadilan Youth chief Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor today urged all Keadilan and reformasi supporters to show their support to jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim when his bail application is heard on Monday.

"I have requested all my Pemuda (Youth members) to come to the court and I also urge all reformasi supporters to come and show our support that he (Anwar) be freed on bail and get the medical treatment of his choice," he said when contacted.

However, he stressed that no demonstrations have been planned.

"My concern is to get him out for medical treatment. So when he is granted bail, we plan to immediately send him to get his treatment. There is no political plans whatsoever. Our focus is on his treatment," he said.

Fair chance

Mohd Ezam added that his optimism concerning the bail application's success remains.

"We have received credible information that the attorney-general's chambers will continue the objection to the bail. But nevertheless, I am still optimistic that there is a fair chance," he said.

According to the Keadilan leader, there will be a gathering at Anwar's residence in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur where a special prayer will be performed on July 13.

There will also be a special briefing for Barisan Alternatif leaders as well.

Next Monday, Court of Appeal judges Pajan Singh Gill, Hashim Mohd Yusof and Richard Malanjum will continue to hear the bail applications by Anwar and his co-accused Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja.

The duo are seeking bail pending the disposal of their appeals against the High Court's decision to convict them for sodomising Azizan Abu Bakar which was affirmed by the three judges.

The ex-deputy premier was sentenced to nine years jail while Sukma received six years' imprisonment and four strokes of the rotan.

No indication

Meanwhile, Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair said there was no indication that Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail had changed his stand regarding the bail application.

"The prosecution had always objected to the bail application. I received nothing from them to say that they intend to withdraw their objection," he said when contacted.

Free Anwar Campaign director Raja Petra Kamaruddin said he has mixed feelings about the outcome of the hearing.

"Two months ago I would not hesitate to say that I am 00 percent certain that (Anwar) will not be given bail. But... since then there has been a lot of changes in the local political scene forcing me to change my mind," he said.

Raja Petra said the 'good signs' included the release of the six Internal Security Act detainees, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's comment on Anwar at the recent Umno meet and the invitation to Mohd Ezam to join Umno.

"But at the same time I suspect that all these may just be temporary efforts by Umno who desperately wants to ensure that the power transition (from Mahathir to his deputy Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) goes smoothly," he added.

Raja Petra also reminded supporters that if Anwar was released, they should not allow the happiness to distract them from the main struggle.

"We know these people's track records. The release of the ISA 6 and Anwar's bail will not solve all the problems. There is still their appeals. They might just release the leaders but can always make efforts to make sure that the appeals are rejected and in they go again," he said.
