Seven non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Terengganu today lodged a police report over a commotion which occurred at a mosque in Kuala Lumpur last Friday.

The NGOs - Kelab Belia Generasi Prihatin, Sahabat Laut Malaysia (Selam), Gerakan Belia 4B Terengganu, Kelab Permotoran Parlimen Kuala Terengganu, Persatuan Pendekar Marang, Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) and Alumni 4B Terengganu - made the report over the incident at the Amru Al-As Mosque in Bandar Baru Sentul.

The report was lodged by a representative of the NGOs, Ismail Awang, who is the secretary of Selam, at the Kuala Terengganu district police headquarters at about 2pm.

NONE Ismail, when approached by reporters, said the NGOs vehemently opposed the unruly behaviour of a group of people who tarnished the sanctity of the mosque when businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah ( centre ) took a "sumpah laknat" (oath which can turn into a curse) at the mosque, swearing that the man in a sex video that he handed to the police in March was opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the action of the group was seen as a desperate attempt by irresponsible people to use the institution of mosques as a new venue to hold demonstrations and reflected an unprofessional attitude to use a house of worship for politics.

"Our intention in making the report is not to take sides but to safeguard the sanctity of Islam and the image of Muslims which has been tarnished by the incident," he said.

Ismail said the NGOs called on the police to conduct an investigation and act against the group.
