S'pore opposition makes historic gains

Edwin Tan: It is great news to hear that a Singapore opposition party is finally able to win a group representation constituency (GRC). It's a one small step for the opposition, but a giant leap for Singapore.

Well done to the people of Singapore. Surely, combined with the recent Sarawak general election result, I won't be surprised to witness a much more bigger political tsunami in the coming 13th general election.

To all my beloved brothers and sisters of Malaysia, please stand firm and united. There is no time to waste any more, soon we'll be given one last chance to alter our nation future.

Loyal Malaysian: So the Aljunied voters have shown Lee Kuan Yew the middle finger with respects his prediction they shall have five years to live in regret if they vote for the opposition. Let the MCA take heed.

I make no claim of knowing the specifics of the Workers' Party victory, but the fact that the voters dumped the Singapore foreign minister is inspiring. So MCA, I'm sure I speak for many other rakyat - "saya pantang dicabar", and we will show you what we think of MCA come GE13.

P Dev Anand Pillai: It is a good sign that the Singaporeans are learning from Malaysians. Perhaps the time has come for us to show them to go all the way - to change completely to a two-party system so that it will be a well-entrenched system for the future of the nation.

Complete dominance by one party will only create fascism and blind allegiance; it will not spur the mind and create thinkers, which in turn will help us develop as a nation. It will only encourage corruption and ruthless governance because of their arrogance that no matter what, the 'dumb rakyat' will vote for them after accepting their 1Malaysia T-shirts, tupperwares, goodie bags and most of all, money.

The talk-show appearances and walkabouts will not fool the 'dumb rakyat'. If you allow yourself to be fooled, then fooled you will be.

Anonymous_3e4b If I were Singaporean, I would support PAP all the way for a job well done. PAP has made Singapore, a small country to be so prosperous and its people well-accepted worldwide. Where ever they go, Singaporeans are proud to be called Singaporeans.

Dappy: PAP has done well in governing Singapore. But a single government for so many years also requires an opposition to check it and to improve on areas like high medical costs, etc.

Heidegger & Derrida: It's not about rejecting the PAP even though they have brought such great progress to the country. it's about the importance of having a healthy and vibrant opposition in a democracy.

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew could never tolerate any kind of dissent - the media remains state controlled and too much power tends to get into the head. His son, Lee Hsien Loong, must accept that even Singapore will move with the times. PAP must get off from their high horse and listen to the people.

Just me: MCA and Gerakan have to remember that the Chinese vote them in not for them to be seated in cabinet or take up state posts and enjoy a cozy five-year term. They are there to serve the voters. They are there to ensure that we Malaysians are treated equally.

After 50 over years, we have deteriorated from second to third-class citizens. Even new ‘pendatang' from Indonesia are accorded better status than us or other races born here years earlier.

So, it makes no sense to trust MCA to be our guardian or uphold our interests any more. If they can longer represent the Chinese, let others do their job. They can cease to exist and no one will ever care.

Ramli Mohd Noor: If the illegal immigrants in Malaysia, especially in Sabah or the natives of Sarawak, are the 'backdoor' or 'trojan horse' for BN to remain in power, than the 'foreign talents' - the thousands of Chinese, Indians and Malaysian PR and new citizens - are the 'backdoor'/'trojanhorse' for PAP.

Apart from supporting the economy, these 'zombies' were brought into Singapore to provide the necessary vote for PAP. Their presence in Singapore is at the expense of ordinary Singaporean - able to purchase HDB flats, competing directly with Singaporean for jobs and worse of all, welcomed with red carpet and exempted from National Service.

PAP doesn't practice corruption and cronyism? These comments must have come from those whose only experience of Singapore is in Orchard Road, knows nothing about the striving of Singapore's opposition. Did you know that Potong Pasir and other areas which voted for opposition did not have MRT passing through?

Anonymous_417c: Singapore elections have been as clean as they come. No suspicious postal votes. No Election Commission bias or interference. No interference by government instruments before or during voting. No issue with the police or armed forces. No vote buying. You can also bet that there will be no frogs too.

Not Convinced: But Singapore has the same gerrymandering system like Malaysia. With 40 percent of the popular votes, the opposition gets only 7 percent of the seats.

Quigonbond: What happened to all the IT systems set up at each governmental departments? Aren't they capable of processing, sending or receiving emails? What do you call the system that the Internal Revenue Board has on e-filing, or the one used by the EPF (Employees Provident Fund)?

The bottom line: Get the IT specialists from a few local banks to share their knowledge on how they send their statements and bills to their customers using Yahoo mail, Gmail or Hotmail for free, and pay them a minute fraction of the RM50 million as consultation fee, and I can assure you that we will save the 50 sen for every single email sent to the "clients" of the Malaysian government.

Dingy: Let's take TNB (Tenaga National Berhad) as an example. After reading the meter at a house by the meter reader, TNB would send the bill by post to the house address. If TNB were to use Tricubes MyEmail, then instead of sending a letter, it will send an email to the registered MyEmail user.

For that to happen, the people must have MyEmail account, registered at the National Registration Department. Given a choice, how many people will take the trouble to go to NRD to register with traffic jam, parking problem, etc?

Let's take Maybank as another example. Maybank has their own portal, M2U. If you are bank customer and had registered at the ATM for online banking, you can go to M2U to do the bill payments, pay credit cards and other transactions.

Maybank advised customers to sign up for eBilling statement to save charges for hard copies. What Maybank did is to send SMS to their customers to check the eBilling in their portal. This is cheaper than RM0.50 using Tricubes MyEmail. It is also secured.
