One day before the 42nd anniversary of the May 13, 1969, racial riots, an opposition MP repeats the call to declassify confidential documents on the tragedy while a prominent Facebook group wants to make tomorrow as 'Malaysians Love Malaysians Day'.

In a statement released today, Gopeng PKR MP Lee Boon Chye urged the government to make public all classified documents, including intelligence reports and notes by foreign correspondents.

He explained that this was because the material furnished by academician Kua Kia Soong indicated that the 'riot' was in fact a coup d'etat against the then-prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman by the then-emergent Malay state capitalists.

Until today, there has been no further explanation by the government over the incident. The burden of May 13 has been shouldered by Malaysians for 42 years.

NONE "It has become a taboo for the public and continues to be instilled in the minds of new generations," said the former PKR vice-president.

Lee ( left ) said the May 13 incident should be turned into an element that encourages national unity, instead of being perceived as an obstacle.

As a multiracial country, people from different races are still restrained by the myth of May 13. Dispelling the myth would definitely help to break down the walls of prejudice and suspicion among the races, he said.

Therefore, he proposed that May 13 be gazetted as National Unity Day.

'Use love to fight racism'

Meanwhile, the No Mega Tower Facebook group will launch a 'Malaysians Love Malaysians Day' starting midnight tomorrow, as its way to counter the hate incited by certain parties such as Utusan Malaysia and Perkasa.

The administrators of the ‘1M Malaysians reject 100-storey Mega Tower' page said they chose May 13 to hold this event in order to get all Malaysians to use love to fight racial hate and pain.

NONE "Forty-two years ago, our country was torn up on May 13 because too few of us remembered that we share this country and its destiny and we swim or sink together," they wrote.

To participate in the event, which will continue till midnight on Saturday, Malaysians are encouraged to say thank you to other Malaysians for sharing the nation with them, wherever they are.

Participants are also encouraged to exchange gifts or sing the popular song Rasa Sayang together, and if possible, wave the Malaysian flag.

A separate but similarly themed event will also be held tomorrow (Friday), starting from midnight to 11.30pm, urging Malaysians to join the 'May 13: Malaysian Interracial Hook-Up Day'.

This event calls on Malaysians to join each other for a meal or simply have a get together.

The Hook-Up Day locations will be at level two of Summit USJ in Subang Jaya from 2pm to 4pm for those living in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, while Penangites can observe the day at Kapitan Nasi Kandar in Queensbay Mall, starting at 8.30pm.
