Lynas to be a disaster based on BN's past records

Expert panel fails to win over Lynas detractors

Kit P: The IAEA's founding charter is the promotion of the civilian use of nuclear energy. I won't go to the extent of directly concluding that the appointed IAEA panel is bias, but the fact is the IAEA's ‘experts' are often pro-nuclear.

The Lynas plant is from an industry that is proven to be heavily polluting, bearing environmental damage that will last for generations, long after the businessmen are gone.

China gets away with it partly because of the deep poverty of the regions where the rare-earth mining is carried out, partly due to the ignorance of its population, and partly because its authoritarian regime brooks no dissent.

Australia refused to allow Lynas to operate the processing plant there. So is it acceptable in Gebeng?

Ksn: I watched the programme on Lynas on Al Jazeera and the discussion with MPs P Kamalanathan of BN and Fuziah Salleh of Pakatan Rakyat.

Kamalanathan said thousands and thousands of jobs will be created and that billions of ringgit will pour in as a result of the project. He was a pathetic sight for his ignorance and lack of facts. Fuziah pointed out that only 300 jobs will be created.

The most important question from Al Jazeera was: Why was the panel set up only now after the project was approved and under construction? We know the reason why. Kamalanathan, on the other hand, had no answer. What was most irritating was that he kept saying the PM had said that and the PM had said this, repeating that line many times.

That was the gist of his argument, quoting from somebody else. So what if it was the PM? Is what the PM said the gospel? It is also revealing that this is the second such project in the world, second to China!

Loyal Malaysian: Thanks Stop Lynas, Save Malaysia spokesperson Vincent Jiam and Kuantan MP Fuziah for alerting the public on the unsuitability of the newly formed panel of experts.

So, International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed, will you now address the concerns of the people directly involved in the opposing the project? If your government is true to its words, it must ensure the panel of experts is acceptable to the critics. Otherwise, it'll just be an academic exercise and the panel will come to a conclusion that the government wants.

Swipenter: "Modern industrial society is a fanatical religion. We are demolishing, poisoning, destroying all life systems on the planet. We are signing IOUs our children will not be able to pay... We are acting as if we were the last generation on the planet.

"Without a radical change in heart, in mind, in vision, the earth will end up like Venus, charred and dead," Brazilian Minister for Environment Jose Antonio Lutzenberger was quoted in the London Sunday Times , March 1991.

Yet the pro-Lynas group fails to understand that living for today is totally selfish and utterly irresponsible and may prove fatal to our future generations.

Bangsamalaysia: The panel may be qualified and competent. They may find Lynas procedures comply with international standards or they may add some additional safety requirements. But that is not the issue!

Once the plant is in full swing, this panel and its recommendations will be old history. Lynas will do as it pleases because this is a lawless country where all you need to do is to line the right pockets. A few corrupt authority figures will be deciding the fate of the people of Gebeng and Kuantan.

Lynas will become an unmitigated disaster for the people of Malaysia if BN's past record of safety and accountability is to used as a yardstick. Stop this plant. Do not stop protesting until the Aussies pack up and find some other more gullible people.

PKFZ suit: 26 ex-PKA board members dragged in

Lee Hwa Beng: Former Port Klang Authority general manager OC Phang has done what I could not do as I was outvoted by my board 5-2. I believe this is a pressure on the present board who are all the same members, except for me - who was replaced by a new chairman - to withdraw the suit against her.

Anonymous_3f1f: These idiots who were at one-time all high and mighty think they are above the law. Of course, they have gained by being the proxies for some other VVIPs. Those who dare to stand in as proxies will be filthy and super rich, but be prepared to face the music if things do not turn out well.

Truth : I totally agree with what OC Phang has done. What happened to collective responsibility of the entire board? Why the selective prosecution of Phang? They were appointed with certain responsibilities, so the question is did they discharge their duties?

They were not appointed as puppets or for show as this is a national project involving the rakyat's money.

Cocomomo: As the general manager could not have done what was done without the board's approval, the board members should be held accountable. Maybe their defence will be that they were too dumb to realise what was going on and blindly approved everything. If so, why did they accept appointment as board members?

Maie58: Why not rope in all the Umno members who were involved in this case to court? What would PM Najib Razak have to say?
