The public should not doubt the halal status of the 1Malaysia UHT milk as it adheres to the halal certification standards set by the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim), said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the milk imported from South Korea had Jakim halal certificate, besides the certificate from the exporting country.

Muhyiddin said the milk supplied to schools was insufficient, hence part of it had to be imported.

“However, the public need not worry as Jakim had before this, issued an order to the supplying company to acquite a halal certificate for the milk before it could be supplied to Malaysia,” he said after officially opening the Baling/Sik District Education Office in Pulai, Baling, today.

He was earlier asked to comment on the claim by Shaharol Niza Omar, chairman of the parent-teacher association of SK Kubur Panjang in Pendang recently that the milk did not have Jakim’s halal logo.

    

On Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships, Muhyiddin said the ministry would meet with MCA leaders on the failure of some top Chinese students to get the scholarships.

“The decision on the scholarships involves the prime minister, cabinet and all leaders of Barisan Nasional component parties based on the formula set.

“Since MCA has raised the issue again, we will study it,” he said.

Muhyiddin said students who had fulfilled the merit criterion of scoring all A+ but failed to get a PSD scholarship would have their cases looked at again.

“The ministry has no problem in allocating the scholarships for those eligible, but it's the parents who think that their children deserve the scholarships by scoring all As when the set criterion is A+ and not A or A-,” he said.
