Selangor MCA Youth deputy chief Liew Yuen Keong resigned from the post today. He has been holding the post since 1999.

Liew was quoted by Bernama as saying that he opted to resign from the post to concentrate more on his other capacities in the party.Liew, who is the Sri Kembangan state assemblyperson is also national MCA Youth vice-chairperson and Selangor MCA liaison committee vice-head.

"There's quite a number of things that I need to perform. I want to do more things at the national youth level and strengthen the party machinery for the general election," he told reporters after the opening of the 34 Selangor MCA Youth General Assembly by party president Ong Ka Ting.

Liew said that he was quitting the post in good faith and was not under pressure from anybody.

I'm doing this for the benefit of the party." he stressed, adding that he tendered his resignation letter last night to the Selangor MCA Youth secretary Lee Li Yew, and a copy to Ong.

'Let exco decide'

He said he would leave it to the MCA Youth executive committee to decide on his successor.

"I don't have anybody in particular to succeed me. Let them decide," he said, urging MCA youth members in Selangor to give their full backing to the state MCA Youth Chief Wong Koon Mun.

Meanwhile, Wong said the movement would hold an emergency meeting before Aug 9 to discuss Liew's resignation. State MCA sources said the meeting would likely reject Liew's resignation to preserve party unity.

Wong said the succession issue would be discussed by the movement at a later date after the emergency meeting.

Meanwhile, Ong said he welcomed Liew's move to pave the way for others to hold the post.

"Definitely, Liew made a way out with good intention. This will help a lot in maintaining unity in the Selangor MCA Youth and strengthen the party," he said.
