Police have started working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to identify culprits behind the dissemination of false information on the acid splashing cases, which has caused panic among Klang Valley residents.      

City CID chief Ku Chin Wah said they have lodged a report with the MCMC to identify the individual involved, and to curb such irresponsible acts.     

"The information disseminated through short message services (SMS), social networking websites like Twitter and Facebook is becoming rampant, although such information are false," he said.     

He was speaking to reporters after launching a community awareness programme on women's safety, in conjunction with a housing exhibition, at a shopping mall here today in the presence of Pandan assemblyman Ong Tee Keat.     

Ku said those who spread false information would be investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code for disseminating news that can cause panic among the public.     

"We view this act seriously...when we identify the culprit, police will investigate the case thoroughly to avoid public fear," he said.     

Ku said currently 23 acid splash cases involving women, with a similar modus operandi and police are out to find out if it was caused by the same individual or not.     

Meanwhile, regarding the development of investigation papers on the death of Selangor Customs assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed, 56, Ku said police have yet to receive orders from the Attorney-General's Chambers to update the papers.     

"The investigation papers are ready...if the Attorney-General issues an order to update them, we will do so," he added.
