Police today filed an application for an inquest to determine the circumstances leading to the death of Selangor Customs assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed.

Officer-in-charge (police) of the Jalan Duta Court Complex, Supt R Munusamy told reporters that the police had sent the sudden death report (SDR) of Ahmad Sarbani to the court registry at 3pm today under Section 399(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code to hold the inquest.

He said it was up to the magistrate as to when the inquest would be held, but an earlier date was expected to be fixed as it was of public interest.

It was reported yesterday that attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail had agreed to the suggestion by the police to hold an inquest after studying the investigation papers submitted by Kuala Lumpur police.

Ahmad Sarbani, 56, who was attached to the Port Klang Customs office, was found dead at the badminton court on the first floor of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission building in Jalan Cochrane in Kuala Lumpur on April 6.

He was reported to have gone to the commission’s office to meet the investigation officer assigned to corruption cases involving 62 customs officers.
