DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang today asked if BN leaders are prepared to face prosecution if an uprising similar to what happened in Egypt recently, occured in Malaysia.
"The latest news from Egypt...is that Cairo criminal court sentenced Egypt's former finance minister Yossef Boutros Ghali in absentia to 30 years in prison on charges of corruption and embezzlement of public money.
"Are (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) and Umno/BN leaders prepared when Tahrir Square comes to Malaysia?" he asked in a statement today.
Lim ( right ) said this in reference to a statement by the premier on the recent World Youth Day, where the latter said that in Malaysia, a million youths had gathered to defend Putrajaya, in contrast to Eygpt's Tahrir Square, where the public gathered to bring the government down.
Najib had said this at the ‘One Million Youth Gathering' which had attracted about 8000 youngsters to Putrajaya.
While the Ipoh Timor MP said that he did not doubt that there could be a million youths in Malaysia who would "defend Putrajaya", this did not necessarily mean that they would be defending BN.
"The prime minister will be sorely mistaken if he thinks there are one million youths in Malaysia to defend Putrajaya, to continue as the seat of federal power of an undemocratic, high-handed, corrupt and decadent regime.
"I have confidence that there will be one million youths in Malaysia in Putrajaya ala Tahrir Square-not to defend Najib, Umno and BN but freedom, democracy and political change in Malaysia by democratic and constitutional means," he said.
Likewise, he slammed deputy minister of international trade and investment Mukhriz Mahathir who ‘congratulated' PKR and DAP for succeeding in influencing PAS so that the Islamic party chose leaders aligned to its Pakatan Rakyat partners.
"(The PAS polls results) is the best demonstration and proof to all Malaysians...that there is nobody in Umno and BN who can live up to their aspirations for change," Lim said.
