Johor PAS' youth wing today challenged the minister in the charge of religious affairs, Jamil Khir Baharom, to act against other structures that may lead to Muslims committing idolatry.

"Aside from 1Malaysia structure, there is another monument built to commemorate the sacrifices of the nation's warriors, that is the National Monument. At the same time, there is the statue of Tunku Abd Rahman Putra Al-Haj, our first prime minister, at the front of Parliament," said Suhaizan in a statement today.

Citing an edict issued by the National Fatwa Council in 1987 and 1995, the PAS Youth leader said it had been established that even the laying of flower wreaths at the foot of the National Monument is to be frowned upon for going against Islamic teachings against the veneration of statues and polytheism.

"Since Jamil Khir is an individual with authority in this country and can prevent (wrongdoing) with his hand (the powers that he holds), it is only right that he acts urgently (against the two monuments)."

The fatwa was publicised through state publications.
