The villagers of Kampung Wakaf Baharu in Tumpat lodged a police report seeking stern action by the authorities against election watchdog Bersih 2.0 which has planned a demonstration in Kuala Lumpur on July 9.

Wakaf Baharu village headman Mat Yusoff Mat Musa, 60, said assembling people with the aim of demonstrating against the government could spark chaos.

“If the demonstration is allowed to take place and violence erupts, the people will be living in fear,” he told reporters after lodging the report at the Wakaf Baharu police station.

Meanwhile, two non-governmental organisations in Bukit Mertajam have lodged police reports seeking a ban on the demonstration planned by Bersih 2.0.

 

Wira Perkasa Pulau Pinang (Perkasa) and Penawar 1Malaysia lodged the reports at the Seberang Perai Tengah police headquarters and called on the police to prosecute the organisers.

Perkasa information chief Norhalim Abdul said the statements issued by the organisers smacked of instigation and had the intention to undermine public order.

“The demonstration will adversely affect the country's economy as it would portray Malaysia as unsafe for foreign investors,” he told reporters after making the report.

PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu had announced on June 7 that Bersih 2.0 would organise the “Walk for Democracy” protest as the government had ignored its demands for electoral reform.

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had warned of stern action against participants of the gathering.
