Kedah Gerakan Youth has urged Bersih 2.0 to hold its planned July 9 rally in a stadium to avoid inconveniencing traders and causing traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur.

NONE In a statement today, the movement's leader Tan Keng Liang said while Bersih 2.0 has the right to voice its opinion, it should not be at the expense of public order.

Tan said that not only are traffic jams guaranteed, the planned rally would also disrupt business activities.

"Apart from that, security and public property in the area might also be threatened," he said.

In view of this, Tan said it would be unreasonable for Bersih 2.0 to reject this proposal since the group said that it's sole objective is to voice their concerns and not create chaos.

Bersih 2.0 is planning a mass rally to submit a petition to the Agong to urge him to pressure the government to implement meaningful electoral reform.

Similar rally

In its past incarnation, known simply as Bersih, held a similar rally in November 2007 to pressure the government into mandating the use of indelible ink to mark those who had cast their ballots.

NONE Other demands at the time includes a thorough update of the electoral roll, eliminating the postal voting system and providing opposition parties access to the mainstream media.

Bersih 2.0's leader Ambiga Sreenevasan ( right ) argued that none of these recommendations have been implemented and the rally was a " last resort " because various attempts to engage the authorities had failed.

In addition to the 2007 demands, Bersih 2.0 is seeking automatic voter registration for those aged 21, postal voting system for out-of-town voters, minimum campaign period of 21 days, independence of enforcement bodies on election offences and stamping electoral graft.
