The cabinet today heard Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen's explanation over the so-called RM1.8 million Facebook page controversy, but did not "accept" the explanation. 

According to the China Press and Sin Chew Daily websites, cabinet sources said that the cabinet "took note" of the explanation but did not want to say that it was accepted.

It is also learnt that during the cabinet meeting, a few ministers had questioned Ng.

Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai confirmed to the press media after the meeting that the cabinet had “taken note” of Ng’s explanation.

He said the cabinet did not go into the details of every item of expenditure, since they had gone through the ministry’s bidding process.

China Press and Sin Chew Daily both reported that although asked several times, Liow didn’t reply on whether the cabinet had accepted Ng’s explanation.

He claimed that the cabinet understands that the RM1.8 million is not just for setting up its Facebook page, as alleged by the opposition, but instead covers six social media projects.

Liow criticised the DAP for misleading the rakyat through defamation and propaganda.

He said that it is important for the government to assure the rakyat that there has not been any abuse of public funds.

Liow added that the cabinet did not order other departments to temporarily halt similar social media projects, in view of the recent incident.

On the other hand, in a recent Facebook poll , 13,206 users voted against Ng, and wanted her to resign for allegedly “wasting RM1.8M on 6 Facebook Pages”.

As at 7.40pm today, only 374 users supported the MCA vice-president.
