Three policemen who went missing in a jungle in Pahang for a week while searching for lost hikers have been airlifted to safety, a report said today.

The hikers had meanwhile made their way safely out of the jungle by themselves, said the New Straits Times .

The policemen set out on Aug 10 to locate five hikers who failed to return from a trek up Brinchang Mountain at the popular resort of Cameron Highlands.

Badly bruised

They became lost and spent the next week trying to find their way out. They were spotted on Saturday but could not be airlifted until the following day due to bad weather and thick mist.

The badly-bruised policemen, Amran Yahya, 39, Nik Mohamad Afizon, 24, and Zulkhairi Zubir, 22, were taken to hospital.

"We survived on wild bananas, young banana shoots and water from rivers," Zulkhairi was quoted as saying. We even built a hut from banana leaves." - AFP
