Over 70 wives of BN elected representatives were struck by food poisoning while participating in the All-Malaysia Wives of BN Elected Representatives' annual sports programme in Kuala Terengganu yesterday.

Terengganu Health, Unity and Consumer Affairs Committee chairperson Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar said several victims showed symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting about 11am, and sought treatment at clinics in their respective hotels.

Of the total, he said, 18 were referred to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.

"There, 15 of them showed severe symptoms and were warded, but their condition was reported to be stable," he said after visiting the victims at the hospital.

Dr A Rahman did not refute the possibility that it was due to the food served at a dinner event, the night before.

He said samples of the food were sent to the Chemistry Department for examination.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Selangor assemblyman's wife, Norliah Mohd Nazir, when met at the hospital, said she began vomiting after consuming food at the dinner which she attended with the wives of other elected representatives.
