PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said today that he was treated well by police while in custody for participating in the July 9 illegal rally.

Noting that some of policemen were polite, Abdul Hadi said however that he did not know how the others were treated.

"I was treated well, some of them even came and shook my hand," he told reporters in Kuala Terengganu. "Our (PAS) concept is that we are not hostile to the police; what we want is to challenge the Barisan Nasional."

NONE He recounted that he was arrested alone and was taken to the Jinjang police station in a lorry.

Abdul Hadi was asked on allegations made by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim that he (Abdul Hadi) had been subjected to police brutality while in detention.

"We cannot say all of them are good; the tear gas was not good because it made breathing difficult. Being taken away in a lorry was also not good, but I want to say that while some of them were rough, others were polite," Abdul Hadi said, adding that PAS would support similar demonstrations in the future.

Let Kedah, DAP sort out dispute

On another matter, Abdul Hadi said it was up to the Kedah government to resolve their dispute with DAP concerning the ban on entertainment outlets in the state during the month of Ramadan.

"We shall let Kedah (state government) solve the problem wisely. If they can rule a state, surely they can negotiate wisely.

"There are regulations for Muslims, then there are the rights of the non-Muslims and then there also common rights for both sides. They should evaluate how to implement the concept," he said.
