The Election Commission (EC) registered 368,373 new voters between April and June this year.

The number comprised 290,665 new voters and 77,708 applications to change polling stations.

In a statement, the EC said the Additional Electoral Roll draft for the second quarter of this year would be displayed in 877 locations nationwide, including state EC offices, computerised post offices, government complexes/offices, district/land offices, district councils, municipalities, and multi-purpose/community halls, among others.

In this respect, those who have just registered or had registered to change polling stations are advised to check the draft.

Those whose names did not appear in the draft, can file a claim using Form B and submit it to the registrar/EC director in their respective states, within seven days from the date the draft was displayed.

The EC will also display names struck off the electoral roll, of voters who had either died, been stripped of Malaysian citizenship or retired from the armed forces or the police.

Heading into uncharted territory

Meanwhile, Equities Research firm Nomura has estimated 3.2 million of new voters by 2013.

According to the research house, this spike of new voters could make the outcome of the next general election highly unpredictable.

In a report released this week, Nomura said that the increase in voters could be as high as 9.43 million when combined with the 2.58 million registered voters who did not turn up at the last general elections in 2008.

The increase of new voters, which constitute about 22 percent of all voters by 2013, is significant, said Nomura.

“Malaysia is heading into uncharted territory, with the increase in the number of voters at levels that could make the election outcome highly unpredictable.” said the report.
