A housewife faces prosecution for giving false information to a public officer after she lied that snatch thieves had grabbed her MyKad when she had actually lost the identification card.

The 55-year-old woman made a police report saying two men snatched her handbag containing the card as well as her bank passbook, pawnshop receipts and RM5 cash on July 31 in front of the Ten Ten supermarket in Kangar.

Kangar police chief Abdul Rahman Noordin said police investigations revealed that there was no such incident.

He said the police had referred the case to the attorney-general's chambers.

The woman could be charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

For reporting a lost MyKad, the National Registration Department imposes a fine of RM100 for the first instance, RM200 for the second and RM300 for the third and subsequent instances.
