Jailed former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim today told the High Court that the allegations contained in a confession made by his adopted brother were baseless and politically motivated.

"I need to reiterate that the allegations are baseless, malicious, defamatory and politically motivated," Anwar said, answering a question from his counsel, Karpal Singh.

The former protege of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Sukma Dermawan Sasmitaat Madja made the confessions under threat, intimidation and humiliation by a group of police officers headed by ASP Mohd Rodwan Yusoff.

"He explained, quite in detail, as to how he was stripped naked," Anwar told judge Arifin Jaka.

In 1998, Sukma made a confession against Anwar alleging that he was sodomised by the former prime-minister-in-waiting. The confession, which contained lurid sexual details, were later revoked by Sukma who said he wrote it under duress.

Anwar and Sukma are charged with sodomising Azizan Abu Bakar on "one night between Jan and March, 1998 at 7.45pm".

Anwar further said there is no truth in the charge preferred against him and Sukma by the prosecution. "There is no basis whatsoever in the allegations as per charged. It is vile and scurrilous."

The one-time heir apparent currently serves a six-year jail term for corruption and stands trial for sodomy and sexual misconduct. Anwar had repeatedly denied all charges and said they were conspired by high-ranking government leaders and Mahathir's aides to topple him from power.

Anwar ended his testimony today, allowing the prosecution to begin cross-examining him. The trial was adjourned at 2:30pm and will resume tomorrow morning.
