In a second attempt to get the government’s urgent attention to resolve the “conspiracy” in granting citizenship to permanent resident (PR) status holders, PAS Youth submitted another memorandum today.

Last week, the party’s youth wing had demanded that the Home Ministry take responsibility for the “Mismah conspiracy”, otherwise, they threatened, they would take their grouses to the streets.

PAS national youth elections director Mohd Sany Hamzan told Malaysiakini after handing over the two-page memorandum to the prime minister’s special officer Ghazali Ibrahim, that the problem is about “violation of the rights of the people and a betrayal of the nation”.

“In Singapore, when the government accords one with citizenship, their officials vet the person - whether the person receiving it is worthy of it and that he or she is able to contribute to the country’s development.

“This is unlike the case here where maids and construction workers are given our country’s citizenship,” said Mohd Sany.

In the memorandum, they outlined five demands:

  • An in-depth investigation into the issue,
  • Stiff action to be taken against those found to have betrayed the country,
  • A full-scale effort tobe launched to avoid a recurrence of the issue,
  • Exposing those behind this “conspiracy” to serve as a lesson to potential traitors,
  • Protecting the nation’s security and sovereignty from such threats.
Mohd Sany also urged the formation of a royal commission of inquiry to conduct an investigation into the matter.

Within hours after the exposé, her status was however changed to full citizenship on the National Registration Department’s (NRD) website.

The Election Commission (EC) cited a mere technical glitch, blaming the NRD for not updating its online data regularly as Mismah had supposedly received her citizenship in January.

Mismah had also come out to object to claims that her citizenship was a result of a fraudulent system.

However, her statement did not silence the critics, who claimed that checks on the electoral roll in Selangor, Perak, Penang, Johor, Kelantan and Terengganu yielded similar cases where PR holders were registered as voters, with at least 1,100 identified in Selangor alone.
