Night market trader Welmi Abdul Latif told the Coroner’s Court in Kota Kinabalu today that the Mercedes Benz driver, who was involved in a collision with former Batu Sapi member of parliament Edmund Chong last year, told her to bear witness that Chong had rammed his motorcycle (superbike) into the Mercedes Benz.

However, Welmi, 37, said she refused the Mercedes Benz driver’s request as she was scared.

“After the incident, I stopped on the left lane. Then I came out of my car and went to the right lane.

“The Mercedes driver didn’t tell me to go and look (at the victim). He told me to be a witness,” she said at the inquest into the death of Chong which entered its fourth day.

edmund chong ket wah 01 Welmi was responding to questions from lawyer Bartholomew Jinggulam, who was holding a watching brief with co-counsel Chin Tek Ming for Chong’s ( left ) family.

She was called to give her account of the accident that occurred on the Coastal Highway, between Sembulan and Tanjung Aru, that claimed Chong’s life at about 11.40am on Oct 9.

The witness also told the court that she refused to divulge information of what she saw when police, who arrived on the scene, told her to.

“Police said, ‘Please tell me (what you saw)’. I said I didn’t want to because I was scared,” she said while facing Coroner Melissa Chia.

The inquest resumes on Aug 22.
