The Mercedes Benz car driver involved in a road crash in which former Batu Sapi member of parliament Edmund Chong was killed, was nervous when lodging a police report, a policeman told the Coroner’s Court in Kota Kinabalu today.

Sergeant Amin Jalil said he noticed Oi Thiam Hoo’s demeanour when recording the driver’s statement to compile the report.

“Oi looked well and healthy when he (first) arrived at the Kota Kinabalu traffic police station.

“However, he appeared nervous when he lodged the report on the accident,” he said.

Chong died in the road mishap when his motorcycle collided with the Mercedes Benz at Jalan Coastal Highway, between Sembulan and Tanjung Aru about 11.40am on Oct 9 last year.

Amin said Oi came to lodge the report after 3pm. About an hour later, night market trader Welmi Abdul Latif arrived to do the same.

Meanwhile, Welmi told the court that she noticed the motorcycle being ridden faster than the Mercedes Benz on the speed lane.

At the time, she said she was driving her Perodua MyVi at 60kph on the left lane.

She said as the Mercedes Benz was quite a large car, there was not sufficient gap either on the right or left side of that car for any vehicle to squeeze through while plying on the speed lane.

“It was not logical for the motorcycle to overtake the Mercedes Benz on its right, if there was no gap to pass through,” added Welmi.

The inquest before coroner Melissa Chia resumes tomorrow.
