Perak mufti: Malays split because gov't is corrupt

Joe Lee: Whilst it is commendable that Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria is finally telling some home truths, he, like many of his ilk, are still talking through the prism of 'them and us'.

It's not only that Malays are split because of government corruption; Malaysians are split for the same reason. If Umno-BN is not corrupt, then it would have found much support among all Malaysians.

But since Umno cannot change and will not change from its corrupt ways, Malays and other Malaysians will have to see to it that it is defeated at the next elections.

While he is at it, Harussani should also advise the police, the MACC, the civil service, the military and others to also refrain from corrupt and samseng behaviour, so that their souls are safe in their afterlife.

Dzulkefly Ahmad: Harussani is playing the politics of Umno. Malays are split because more and more Malays realise that Umno is for a selected few, not the masses.

Next, he will say that Najib kowtows to non-Malays and is a traitor to Malays. Harussani will twist and manipulate the facts to scare Malays into thinking their rights are being eroded and non-Malays are becoming more powerful.

Ksn: It appears that once in his life instead of his usual fanatical and racial talk, Harussani has said something sensible, if he did say what he claimed to have said to the prime minister.

Now, could the mufti extend that same reasoning and logic to the whole country comprising the entire population made of Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Ibans, Orang Asli, etc. He will come to the conclusion that the whole country is in such a state, without harmony, is because of Umno's corruption and abuses of power.

Geronimo: The non-Malays are cruel? My goodness, how did Harussani come to this conclusion. If he says it is from the holy book, then it is a religion that is propagated out of context.

Look around you, do you find non-Malays ill-treating the Malays? But when I say the Malays (read Umno) is ill-treating the non-Malays, then it is not far fetched. This is the result from the entrenched NEP which have deprived non-Malays equal opportunities.

On a personal note, Harrusani is cruel when he with bad intention sent out SMSes to the Malay community in Perak to say there was a mass conversion of Muslims to Christianity, when it was actually Catholic children undergoing a confirmation ceremony.

What happened if a riot had taken place and lives were lost? This is the most irresponsible act of a state mufti, and yet he has the audacity to label others.

Dr Irwan Jusoh: Harussani is clearly out of line and it is the opportune time for the government to sack him. No one is cruel and please do not insult the Quran by stating that the non-Muslims are cruel.

Quran is a holy book of love and respect and it does not preach hatred. It also does not mention unity of Malays and all the crap.

Anonymous: Harussani is suffering from delusions of grandeur. Instead of advising prime ministers, he should advise the head of Islam in his own state, Perak, to behave righteously. For a start, he should present audited reports of the Perak Baitulmal Fund.

Artchan: He knows Najib's days are numbered and he is fishing in troubled waters. The battle lines within Umno are all drawn and this is really between the PM and DPM.

David Dass: Is Harussani saying like some others that Muslims can never or should never socialise with non-Muslims or form governments with them?

Then Umno cannot work with the other BN partners. And what happens to Muslims in countries where they are the minority? Must all Muslims move to countries where only Muslims are?

Whose interest does it serve to allow someone like this to spew so much garbage without penalty or sanction? How does Islam or the nation benefit from tension between the races or from polarisation or from people emigrating because they cannot take this constant attempt by some to stoke the fires of racial and religious hatred?

There is no spiritual law that says people of different faiths cannot live together peacefully and harmoniously. This is not what my Muslim friends tell me of what the Quran says.

Small wonder that prime ministers do not always listen to him. Just as well.

4thForce: Many people who commented here didn't attend the forum and look how they lambasted not only the mufti but also Islam based on what is reported by Malaysiakini .

Quran gives warning and reminders to all humanity, but I don't recall Quran stating non-Muslims being cruel simply because they are non-Muslims. Reporting on interpretation of Quran by people who are not knowledgeable would result in this gross misunderstanding.

I would advise Malaysiakini to be careful in this area and not simply report without clarifying. You could be held responsible for irresponsible journalism.

Not Convinced: 4thForce, the commentators in Malaysiakini are lambasting Harussani for his claims that non-Muslim are cruel, not the beautiful religion of Islam.

Even an idiot can see it. Why don't you too criticised the ‘knowledgeable' Perak mufti for misinterpreting the Quran?

Tan Kim Keong: The Sultan of Perak has no other choice but to sack Harussani. It will be a very sad day indeed if Harussani still remains as Perak mufti.

This contradicts Raja Muda of Perak Raja Nazrin Shah's first principle as testified by his keynote address on ‘Prospects and Challenges for Nation Building' not too long ago.

In it he said: "Malaysians of all races, religions and geographic locations need to believe beyond a shadow of doubt that they have a place under the Malaysian sun."

Sack Harussani now and this first principle will stand in perpetuity. Otherwise, it will ring hollow to eternity.

Onyourtoes: The country has accepted Malay leadership since independence. There is no problem with race; it is good, trustworthy and competent leadership that the country wants.

It is time to move on, give the power to whoever who can govern prudently, fairly and add value to this country. Blind loyalty to race is moronic and should be discarded.
