Malaysians keen to become an astronaut under a space programme with Russia have been invited to submit their applications to join the project, a report said today.

Two candidates would be shortlisted next April by the Malaysia astronaut programme committee, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.

One would be a reserve candidate while their other would spend six days in space.

It said they would undergo training at the International Space Station centre in Russia. The launch countdown is set for late 2005.

Basic requirements

Defence Minister Najib Razak said Malaysians who meet the basic requirements could apply to become an astronaut.

"Applications are open now and you can register through the website ," he said.

A potential astronaut, who would fly into outer space in a Russian spaceship, must be 21-years-old, in good health and prepared to undergo training in Russia for 18 months.

"We will select anyone irrespective of gender who fits the bill. We hope the space programme will spur more Malaysians to pursue a career in space studies and encourage local scientific and space industries," Najib said.
