Seventeen deaths were reported on the seventh day of the Ops Sikap 24 exercise yesterday, with motorcyclists again leading the number of fatalities.

The Bukit Aman police website reported that 10 of the dead were motorcyclists, six were motorists and one pedestrian.

With the 17 deaths recorded yesterday, the total number of deaths since the first day of Ops Sikap has increased to 134.

According to the report, the 17 deaths occurred in seven fatal accidents on federal roads, municipal roads and state roads.

Ops Sikap that was launched by Bukit Aman deputy police chief Khalid Abu Bakar last Monday, was aimed at reducing fatal accidents and creating awareness on the need for motorists to exercise caution while driving.

Meanwhile, police also issued 1,060 summonses to traffic offenders, raising the total number of summonses issued to 10,154.

Ops Sikap 24 will end on Sept 6.
