A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake shook north Sumatra, Indonesia this morning, sending tremors to several states in peninsular Malaysia.

In a statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said the earthquake’s epicentre was 127km southwest of Binjai, north of Sumatra and 363km southwest of Pangkor Island, Perak.

The tremors were felt in parts of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Kedah and Penang following the 1.55am earthquake.

No tsunami alert was issued for Malaysia.

“The department is monitoring the situation and will issue any latest information,” it said.

A spokesperson of the Fire and Rescue Department in Bukit Jelutong, Selangor, said the station received calls from the public informing about the tremors.

“Calls were received between 2am and 2.50am from around Shah Alam, Kuala Kubu Baru, Selayang, Pinggiran Batu Caves and Ulu Bernam,” he told Bernama .

Checks showed no damage to the buildings in the area, he said.
