The Works Ministry will hold discussions with Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) to identify job scope and contracts worth RM8 billion to be distributed to bumiputera contractors via the implementation of the Sg Buloh-Kajang stretch of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system.
Its minister, Shaziman Abu Mansor, said he would meet Prasarana officials next week to determine the areas of work suitable to be undertaken by bumiputera contractors according to their ability and capacity.
"Via this way, we will find the best mechanism to distribute the contracts to the bumiputera contractors," he told reporters at his Hari Raya open house in Tampin today.
Shaziman said the meeting would be a follow-up to the announcement made by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak who had earlier allocated RM8 billion worth of projects under the Sg Buloh-Kajang MRT to bumiputera contractors.
Systematic distribution of contracts
Shaziman said the initiative was also intended to ensure the distribution was done systematically to avoid any hiccups in future.
The minister also said he would meet the Bumiputera Contractors Association to brief them on how they can participate in the project.
"We must be careful because if the selected contractor is not capable to carry out the project, then it may result in many problems like cost over-runs, delay or the project being abandoned," he said.
