Malaysian students were not involved in a fight at Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, this afternoon.

Malaysian education attaché in Jakarta Ludinata Misnun said all Malaysian students at the university were safe and they had been advised to distance themselves from the fray.

Sixty-eight new students from Malaysia enrolled at the university early this month, Ludinata said in a statement.

Two groups of students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences attacked each other with sticks and stones about 2pm.

The fight, which was believed to be due to personal misunderstandings, was stopped by the police two hours later.

According to the university's administration, such fights are common among students during new intake registration.
