Malaysian police are seeking help from Singapore in a bid to collect US$7.5 million in unpaid fines from over 95,000 summonses issued against drivers from the city state, reports said Sunday.

A team from the Malaysian police will visit the Singapore authorities in a bid to identify vehicle owners who have not paid fines for offences committed in Malaysia.

Malaysia's director of internal security and public order Mohamad Sedek Ali said police were unable to issue fines to Singaporeans caught on speed cameras.

"Sometimes, it's not that the drivers refuse to pay their fines, but it's just that their data is stored only in Singapore and not here," he was quoted as saying by the Malay-language Berita Minggu.

The move follows a crackdown on errant Singaporean motorists after Malaysia announced close to 10,000 Singaporeans had ignored summonses, mostly for speeding, forcing Kuala Lumpur to issue arrest warrants.

Official police statistics show that Singaporean motorists have accumulated 95,460 outstanding summonses for fines worth RM28.6 million (US$7.5 million) in Malaysia over the past three years. - AFP
