Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, Sultan of Kedah Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail and the Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah are among those who have confirmed will be attending the two-day Congress of State Islamic Religious Councils on Sept 26.   

The congress’ deputy chairperson, Dr Mohd Yusof Noor, said Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Faiz and the Yang di-Pertua Negri of Sabah Juhar Mahiruddin and Yang di-Pertua Negri of Malacca Mohd Khalil Yaakob would also be attending the congress which was scheduled to be opened by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre.   

Speaking to reporters in Putrajaya today, he said the congress was being held for the first time to further strengthen the role of the state Islamic religious councils and clear up confusion among certain parties on the roles of the councils.   

“Lately, there were many who were confused with the role of the religious councils. There were quarters which ignored the role of the council and indirectly disregarded decisions made by the Malay rulers as of the heads of Islam in the their repective states,” he said, adding these were the reasons for organising the congress.   

Mohd Yusof, who is also the chairman of the Islamic Religious Education Coordination Advisory Board, said he also hoped the congress would come out with resolutions which would be brought to the Conference of Rulers for consideration.
