Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that Umno has never issued any statement that it would implement hudud law.

Hence, his disappointment with the statement of MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lok on his Twitter page that the party would withdraw from BN if Umno implemented hudud law.

"We did not say we would or not (implement hudud). We didn't say anything," he told reporters after the 50th annual general meeting of Perkim, the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia in Seremban.

"There was no call for them to make the statement," Mahathir said, and alluded to the spirit of BN.

Crack in BN will benefit DAP

A crack in BN, with the MCA leaving, would only benefit the DAP, he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said on Thursday that while Umno members as Muslims must accept hudud law in principle, it is not yet time for it to be implemented in multi-religious Malaysia.

Muhyiddin however added that it is Umno's job to engage the other races in Malaysia so that they understand and know about hudud to one point in time when they may accept it.
