Kedah MCA chairperson Chong Itt Chew said today he was ready to give up all party posts and pave the way for a new face to contest in his place in the next general election.

"I conveyed my decision to the party president about a month ago," he told Bernama .

He said his decision to call it quits was not due to health reasons but because he wanted to focus on other things.

On the next general election, he said the party was striving to draw Chinese voters back to the Barisan Nasional (BN).

"We have been working on designated areas for more than a year now as we realise it is not easy to win back the support of the Chinese voters who now back the opposition.

"I am convinced that the approach taken by the MCA in meeting the voters directly and the cooperation among the BN component members will enable us to recapture the seats lost to the opposition," he said.

In the last general election, in 2008, the MCA contested two parliamentary and four state seats in Kedah. It won only one parliamentary and one state seat.
